Oregon, Washington Seeking “Second Opinion” On New I-5 Bridge Plans

The Governors of Oregon and Washington hope to put to rest some of the nagging doubts over plans for a new I-5 bridge between Portland and Vancouver.

Kulongoski and Gregoire say they’re forming an outside panel to review the project – better known as the Columbia River Crossing. The panel’s job will be to make sure the work can be done on time and on budget.

Protests Planned For The Next I-5 Bridge Meeting

Groups opposed to the current plans for a new I-5 bridge between Portland and Vancouver are calling for a protest Friday morning.

Stop The Columbia River Crossing and the Coalition For A Livable Future are asking people to show up at 9:30am outside ODOT’s offices at 123 NW Flanders in Portland. That’s where the Project’s Sponsor Council will be meeting at 10am.

Another new development, a large coalition of environmental and other activists are taking on the Governors of Oregon and Washington for their support of the project.

Metro Prez Candidates Debate Growth, Bridges and Traffic

The three leading candidates for Metro Council President talked about growth, bridges, traffic and more during a forum Tuesday night.

It was billed as a chance for all of them to address issues surrounding sustainability. But they also talked about affordable housing, white flight, and issues of inequality. Since many of those in the audience were Metro employees, they discussed workplace respect and health care benefits.

Metro Leaders Blast I-5 Bridge Plans, Call For A New Way Forward

A letter from metro leaders on both sides of the Columbia River say something’s gotta give in plans for a new I-5 bridge between Portland and Vancouver.

The letter is signed by Portland Mayor Sam Adams, Metro Council President David Bragdon, Clark County Commissioner Steve Stuart, and Vancouver Mayor Tim Leavitt. It was sent to the Governors of Oregon and Washington.

In the letter, the men wonder how much longer they’ll be able to continue supporting the project considering it’s high costs, financial risks, and questions over “whether important objectives will be achieved.” Unless those issues are addressed, they say the project imposes “unacceptable impacts on our communities.”
