The Oregon League of Conservation Voters says it’s endorsing Jeff Cogen as the new chairman of Multnomah County, and Karol Collymore for a seat on the county commission.

In a statement released this morning, OLCV praises Cogan for his efforts on sustainability, the environment, climate change, the local food economy and open spaces. “Jeff understands how clean energy and innovation can create good jobs and a stronger, more fair economy,” says OLCV PAC Board Chair Charlie Burr. “Jeff is a proven leader and environmental champion.”

Like a lot of other political groups, OLCV was scrambling following the sudden death of State Treasurer Ben Westlund. Westlund’s passing left a huge void in Oregon’s political structure. The impact was greatest in Multnomah County.

On Tuesday, Multnomah County Chair Ted Wheeler left his job and was appointed by the Governor to take over as State Treasurer. That set off a bizarre series of events. Some well known political figures said they were filing for Wheeler’s old job – then changed their minds. When it was all over, Cogen was pretty much the only one left standing.

As far as Collymore, OLCV describes her as someone who’s worked hard for community gardens, farmers markets, and on climate change. “Karol’s work to promote park spaces in neighborhoods and her focus on cleaner air and local food—especially for our kids—earned her the early endorsement,” adds Burr. “Karol’s experience and knowledge of the county will make her an effective voice for healthy communities.”

And here’s a twist I didn’t expect. An “early endorsement” means the OLCV might decide to endorse other candidates in the same race.

OLCV started naming the candidates it’s endorsing on Tuesday. Since then, it’s released about 60 names in races across the state. It’s holding off making a decision on the Governor’s race until after a March 30th debate on environmental issues.
