TUESDAY:

Ban The Bag

The Portland Chapter of Oregon Surfrider gets serious about a bill before the legislature to ban single use plastic bags in Oregon. Tonight’s meeting is about giving members the tools for activism, presenting, and engaging in the Ban the Bag Campaign. The chapter has previously supported a 20-cent per bag fee in Portland. But that campaign appears to be taking a back seat now that legislators are showing some interest in a statewide ban.

Details: 7:30pm, at the offices of WEND magazine, 2001 NW 19th, Suite 103 B, Portland.

WEDNESDAY:

Bisphenol A Ban

The Oregon League of Conservation Voters holds a telephone town hall with a pair of Oregon legislators to talk about SB 1032. The bill bans the sale and manufacture of food and drink containers to children under three, if the containers are lined with bisphenol A.  New guidelines from the FDA say the agency is concerned about the potential effects of BPA on the brain, behavior, and prostate gland in fetuses, infants, and young children.

Oregon House Speaker Dave Hunt and State Senator Chris Edwards are scheduled to take part in the discussion.

Reservations are required. Contact Katy Daly with OLCV at katy@olcv.org.

Details: Starts at 7pm at a telephone near you.

Georgia Pacific Wastewater Meeting

Oregon Surfrider, Oregon DEQ, the Georgia Pacific company and OSU are leading a public meeting in Newport to talk about G-P’s wastewater permit for its mill in Toledo, Oregon.

In the past, Surfrider has complained that the permit doesn’t address important issues such as how much bacteria is in the wastewater, the cloudiness or turbidity of the discharge, or what it does to oxygen levels in the Pacific Ocean.

The G-P mill wastewater is sent out through a pipe that extends 4000 feet into the ocean near Nye Beach.

Details: 6:30pm, Hatfield Marine Science Center, Hennings Auditorium, Newport
