One of the state’s most politically active conservation groups is endorsing Bob Stacey in the race for Metro Council President.
The Oregon League of Conservation Voters praises Stacey as a, “decisive leader with a vision to protect the environmental integrity of the region.”
The choice probably wasn’t all that easy to make. The other two candidates they considered have received OLCV endorsements in the past.
Stacey’s background includes working as a staff attorney for 1000 Friends of Oregon and later serving as Executive Director for seven years. He was also very active in the campaign for Measure 49, the ballot initiative that restored much of the land use controls that were torn up by Measure 37.
He’s also been involved in expanding light rail.
Stacey advocates dropping the Columbia River Crossing, the plans for a new I-5 bridge between Portland and Vancouver. Stacey says the proposal is too expensive, and will promote sprawl, traffic congestion and pollution. He calls for repairing the existing bridges and adding a new, but smaller, bridge to accommodate mass transit, bicyclists and pedestrians.
The other candidates considered by OLCV are Rex Burkholder who currently serves on the Metro Council, and former Hillsboro Mayor Tom Hughes. The OLCV describes both men as “worthy competition” to Stacey.
All three are expected to take part in a forum sponsored by the Westside Economic Alliance on January 28th at the Embassy Suites in Tigard. The event starts at 7:30am.

Tom Hughes: I couldn’t find a website, but he does have a Facebook page.
They’ll be on the May 18 primary ballot. If any of them gets more than 50% of the vote, they win the seat. Otherwise, the top two finishers meet again on the November general election ballot.
