The Bureau Of Land Management is calling for reductions of 63-92% in the miles of trails that are open to OHVs. Right now, BLM says the area supports 376 miles of trails. But the changes under consideration could knock that down to 140 miles, or even as few as 31 miles.
The changes are part of BLM’s new management plan for the 15,114-acre Timber Mountain Special Recreation Management Area, often referred to by local residents as John’s Peak.
BLM says it wants to decommission the trails to help improve watersheds, and prevent accidental trespassing on nearby private land.
There’s a public hearing on the issue scheduled for Thursday, April 2nd. It will start at 6pm at the Medford Interagency Office on 3040 Biddle Road.
