New Hope For Tougher Oregon Emissions Law

January 26, 2009
By Dennis Newman

Week two in office and President Obama took a big step towards letting California, Oregon and Washington adopt tougher emission standards for automobiles.

California led the way in 2002, when it approved tougher standards to reduce greenhouse gases. But since then, it battled with the auto industry and Bush Administration and the new standards never took effect.

Oregon and Washington joined the bandwagon when they also adopted the California standards.

What Obama did today, was to direct the EPA to find review the Bush rulings and see if there are ways to let states go ahead with standards that are tougher than what the feds require.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the EPA is expected to take several months to decide.
